How do I keep pipes from freezing?

Keep the heat on, even when you are away; let faucets on outside walls drip on the coldest nights; open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls; and shut off and drain outdoor spigots before winter.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve right away, then call a plumber. Find your main shut-off before winter so you are not looking for it in an emergency.

Do plumbers need a state licence in New York?

No. New York has no statewide plumbing licence; some cities and towns license plumbers locally, so check with your city or town building office.
