Question 1

How often should a furnace or boiler be serviced?

Accepted Answer

Once a year, before the heating season, is what most equipment makers recommend. A tune-up is also when a technician checks for carbon monoxide leaks and worn parts.

Question 2

Do heat pumps work in a North Country winter?

Accepted Answer

Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating in sub-zero weather, though output drops as it gets colder. Many homes here pair one with a gas or oil furnace that takes over on the coldest days (a 'dual-fuel' system).

Question 3

Are there rebates for heat pumps in New York?

Accepted Answer

Yes. NYS Clean Heat pays heat pump incentives through your electric utility, usually applied for by a participating contractor. Ask the contractor whether they participate, and check current amounts on the program's site.

Question 4

What certification should an AC or heat pump technician have?

Accepted Answer

Anyone who works with refrigerant needs EPA Section 608 certification. Ask for it if the job touches an air conditioner or heat pump.
