Question 1

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

Accepted Answer

The national fire-safety standard for chimneys (NFPA 211) calls for an inspection every year, with cleaning when soot or creosote has built up. A chimney used for regular wood fires usually needs a sweep at least once a year.

Question 2

What is the difference between an inspection and a cleaning?

Accepted Answer

A cleaning (a sweep) removes soot and creosote. An inspection checks the flue, liner and masonry for damage. A basic (Level 1) inspection looks at what can be reached; a Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue and is called for after a chimney fire, a change of heating appliance, or a home sale.

Question 3

Does a gas or oil appliance's chimney need attention too?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Gas and oil vents don't build creosote, but nests, debris and a damaged liner can still block them. NFPA 211 covers them as well.
